Language Skills | 华语全能班
(Primary 1 to Primary 4)

Schedule: 2 hour sessions, once per week

Our Language Skills programme supports students in reaching the standards expected for primary school Mandarin curriculum in Malaysia and Singapore.

Each level of the programme focuses on developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through a variety of dynamic and age-appropriate teaching methods.

The programme includes:

Storytelling
Stories are presented by the teacher and explored through drama, writing and multi-media activities, to develop children’s listening, creativity and expressive skills.

Oral language activities
Through discussions, and designing of story plots and narration, children develop their oral communication skills and confidence in speaking in Mandarin.

Science
Children expand their knowledge of natural science by using their five senses to experience the world around them and participating in experiments.

Picture comprehension
The skills of being able to describe pictures in a structured manner while using rich, vivid language are developed.

Reading
Vocabulary is enhanced and linguistic knowledge is developed through reading activities.

Writing
Children learn how to create and develop dialogues, and use a variety of writing styles, sentence structures and idioms.

This programme enables children to progressively add colour and depth to their existing Mandarin communication skills. As they master the use of expressive vocabulary, pronunciation and cadence, and increasingly complex sentence structures, they learn to appreciate the intricacies of the language and begin to enjoy using it in all areas of life.

Creative Writing | 创意写作

Creative Writing | 创意写作
(Primary 1 to Primary 4)

Schedule: 2 hour sessions, once per week

Our Creative Writing programme draws on a series of stimulating strategies and techniques which enable children in Primary 1 to 4 to understand and enjoy using essential elements of spoken Mandarin and Chinese script.

The programme uses a range of strategies to stimulate each child’s creative thinking, enabling them to create their own works of literature. They learn to use language imaginatively, resulting in colourful and confident speech and writing.

Vocabulary building
Children develop their awareness of Mandarin words and phrases through games and character recognition activities.

Literature and picture analysis
Discussions about the structure, meaning and emotions behind stories, poems and pictures encourage children to think analytically and critically.

Oral composition
In developing children’s confidence in spoken communication, oral composition activities are conducted to enable children to organise and express their thoughts fluently in Mandarin.

Writing
Children develop their ability to think and express themselves creatively in written form, structuring different types of text effectively.

Mandarin Expressions | 口语表达与写作

Mandarin Expressions | 口语表达与写作
(Primary 5 to Primary 6)

Schedule: 2 hour sessions, once per week

Our Mandarin Expressions programme supports children in meeting the demands of Malaysia and Singapore’s Ministry of Education’s Primary 5 and 6 Mandarin curriculum. It also enhances their ability to express themselves in the language with confidence, and gives them the opportunities to explore uses of the language in contexts which go beyond school work.

The programme makes learning Mandarin meaningful and rewarding for upper-primary students, inspiring an enjoyment of the language for academic purposes and in many other areas of life.

Oral language activities
Discussions, vocabulary building exercises, games and presentation activities enhance children’s oral communication skills, their ability to organise their thoughts, and confidence in speaking in both formal and informal settings.

Literature and picture analysis
Discussions about the structure, meaning and emotions behind stories, poems and pictures of varying forms and structures nurtures reasoning, creative and analytical thinking in children.

Contextual use of language
Exercises focus on the use of Mandarin beyond school contexts, such as writing e-mails and communicating in Mandarin online, which will allow children to expand their language skills and develop a wider understanding of the language.

Writing skills
To enhance their writing skills, children are given the opportunity to practice the use of different styles and structures of writing, and rhetorical and literary devices such as personification, hyperbole and analogy.

Creative writing
Children are encouraged to explore and develop their creative thinking and imagination, and express thoughts and emotions in written form through the creation of stories and poems.
